Ceiling Attic Access Shelves

Buildings with combustible ceiling or roof construction shall have an attic access opening to attic areas that have a vertical height of 30 inches 762 mm or greater over an area of not less than 30 square feet 2 8 m 2 the vertical height shall be measured from the top of the ceiling framing members to the underside of the roof framing members.

For some unknown reason attic access doors in older homes are usually through a small scuttle hole cut in the ceiling. Find space in the attic with bank of drawers built into the eaves. Build an attic closet against the attic wall using shelves and low hanging rod. Custom low storage is installed below the point where the sloped ceiling meets the knee wall in this attic closet. If you truly need hanging space along that short wall less than 42 inch height you will need to use one of the other methods described below to add your storage.

A ceiling attic access door provides easy access for maintenance repairs or other purposes. Shoe shelves often work very well placed low to the floor. Often the access is in an out of the way place like a closet.
